About Me

My name is Courtney and I am a junior at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA. I have been an athlete since I was a 4 year old playing soccer and a 9 year old on a summer swim team. By my freshman year of high school, I was a little tired of soccer and wanted to try something else. I went out for the cross country team with no expectations, just run. I had no idea what fartlek, half mile repeat, hills, tempos, intervals, etc. meant. I just  knew the coach was awesome and the girls were super nice. I had a pretty successful freshman year and dropped times like crazy, I even ended up running varsity at every race!
Look! 13 year old Courtney running.

Here is another for your viewing pleasure. I changed from pigtail braids to a single braid. Another picture from freshman year.

Then that's where swimming picked up. I had no idea how hard high school swimming would be. I tried so hard and was so much slower than everyone else. No one liked swimming the 500, so coach made us take turns. A few weeks into the season, it was my turn to swim the 500 and I shocked everyone. I was no olympic caliber 500 yd swimmer, but I definitely had the passion and endurance for it.

<Unfortunately, I can't find any good swimming pictures right now, but I am sure I will be able to find at least one>

I tried track in the spring during my freshman year and hated it. So my sophomore year, I joined the crew team. My swim coach told my mom I needed to try rowing to help my swimming. I fell in love with rowing after the first 2 weeks. I found myself in a varsity boat and had a great time. I ended up qualifying for Nationals in a lightweight double in 2009.
First season of rowing- Lightweight 4+
Another rowing picture, this is from 2009, just before Nationals. Gotta love the 6am glass like water.

Fast forward to my senior year after I moved to Virginia. I continued running, swimming some, and rowing. I needed to find some activity and competition for college. I knew that I would burn out if I ran, swam, or rowed all year for 4 years. So, triathlon it was. I had the endurance for it, and I was sure I could pick up biking pretty easily *I WAS WRONG, cycling is much harder than I thought it would be* Plus I had done a sprint triathlon once a year beginning when I was twelve... and no I couldn't find a good picture from back then, but here are then and now pictures
